2D GIFs VS 3D Animations

When 3D scenes became too heavy for mobile optimization, an alternative solution was implemented using GIF animations.

A GIF functions as a sequence of images played rapidly in a loop, creating lightweight animation without audio. Compared to video formats, GIF files are smaller and more suitable for mobile AR overlays.

While this doesn’t have the same effect as a full 3D animation, it is a high-performance way to add movement and animation to a project.

Workflow Overview

  1. Create and render the 3D animation (maximum 30 FPS).
  2. Render with a transparent background.
  3. Convert rendered sequences into GIF format using video editing software.
  4. Import GIFs as image planes inside Lens Studio.

It is critical that Image Tracker assets match the exact uploaded image dimensions to prevent scaling or alignment issues.
